World Bird Drawing Day arrives in South Park for all children, parents and bird lovers
This Saturday may be just another ordinary day, but not for the Bulgarian Illustration Publishing House, the Society of Animalists, Florists and Scientific Illustrators (DAFNI), the National Museum of Natural History - BAS and all those who join the plein air they have organized to celebrate World Bird Drawing Day together. The event will take place in South Park in Sofia, where over 65 species of birds sing in the morning, including great and blue tits, jays, ducks, blackbirds and even squirrels (they don’t sing, but they hop around).

The story of the unusual holiday begins in London in 1943. Seven-year-old Dory Cooper visited her uncle in the hospital, who was lying there depressed because he had lost one of his legs during World War II. After her unsuccessful attempts to cheer him up, Dory asked him to draw her a bird. A childishly crooked robin appeared on the white sheet, which sincerely made the little girl laugh. Dory kept the drawing, and her uncle was motivated by her laughter to try to look at life more cheerfully. To this end, he drew a bird every time he expected to see Dory. Other patients joined in the effort, and the gray hospital walls were soon covered in colorful drawings of various birds. Three years later, Dory died in a car accident, and at her funeral, doctors, nurses, and soldiers covered her coffin with drawings of birds. Since then, April 8, Dory's birthday, has been celebrated as Bird Drawing Day.

Gradually, art teachers began to use the holiday as an opportunity to inspire confidence in budding young artists, parents to help their children develop empathy for feathered creatures, and nature lovers to share their love for the immense diversity and beauty of the bird kingdom.
On Saturday, April 8, at 11:00 a.m. near the Big Lake, the organizers of the plein air are expecting everyone who wishes to join in with a sketchbook, pencils, crayons, paints or a camera in hand, and at the end of the month their colorful drawings will be exhibited at the National Museum of Natural History at the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences. Those who are unable to come to the South Park will be able to participate online by sending photos of their works to milena@bulgarian-illustration.com by April 24, 2023, and soon the Bulgarian Illustration Publishing House will continue the theme of birds in urban environments with a special edition.
