The originals, which will be shown to the public for the first time, present some of the most beloved characters from the book. Among them are the notorious That Thing, The Brave T-shirt, His Legs Stick Out, The Stinker with Her French Magazine from 1903, Fatty, the Cuckoo, The Pedestrian Who Whistles with His Mouth and many others.
Over the years, the illustrations for "We, the Sparrows" have undergone numerous transformations. From the first to the last edition of the book, there are many noticeable differences in the beloved sparrows. Yordan Radichkov has not stopped redrawing them over the years, experimenting with the appearance of his characters. He draws many versions of the sparrows themselves, the scarecrow, the cat, the hawk, in order to arrive at the final and most refined version of his birds.
Visitors to the event will have the opportunity to learn more about the originals and the characteristic drawing style of Yordan Radichkov from Anton Staykov.
Along with this, the new edition of "We, the Sparrows" will also be presented at the opening of the exhibition. For the first time in many years, it appears in hardcover and with a wonderful new look, created by the artist Sofia Popyordanova.
“Do you see this bird feather that is swaying and struggling to stay in the air? It flies alone, looks around with hope and falls lower and lower. A lot of feathers are flowing under the sky and one by one the feathers will fall silent below, on the ground. Sometimes a quiet wind will pass by the fingers, lift them up and they will remember again that they once flew, that they bathed in the blue air, they dived and rustled merrily. But even though down on the ground, even though dead, our bird feather stands as if at any moment it will startle in its dream, feel a living thrill and fly again”
“We, the Sparrows” is the second children's book by Yordan Radichkov. It first appeared in 1968 and the very next year the work was awarded the prize of the Union of Bulgarian Writers.
The real award and recognition for “We, the Sparrows” comes with the numerous translations of the book into Czech, Slovak, Hungarian, Polish, Russian, Finnish, Italian, German, French, Korean and many other languages, the numerous editions in Bulgaria and several generations of readers who have grown up with the stories of the brave sparrows. Along with this, “We, the Sparrows” is also the longest-running production in the repertoire of the Sofia Puppet Theater.
About “We, the Sparrows” the author shares: “..The book is written for children and adults and I love it because it tells about sparrows. And I believe that all people, before they grow up, become important or significant, were sparrows before that.”
The stories about the bird riviera, what is the sparrow game, who is a scarecrow for snowmen, can you sow scarecrows, how to fly in reverse, do sparrows go to school, how to get to Constantinople, who is Dear Sir, how many weeks of dry food does it take to get to the moon and what is that dot in the sky that we often notice are a small part of the world of "We, the Sparrows".
