The Children's and Youth Literature Days "VarnaLit 2017" have begun. The events of the program were announced at a press conference today, hosted by Mayor Ivan Portnikh, with the participation of authors Georgi Gospodinov, Zahari Karabashliev, Teodora Dimova, Stefan Pastis /USA/, Ilian Lyubomirov, Konstantin Trendafilov, Val Stoeva and other authors, Kristiana Dimcheva from the Bulgarian Literature Association "P. Slaveykov". The host of the event was Georgi Toshev.
"I thank everyone who made the "VarnaLit" festival possible. I am glad that the initiative is launched on the eve of the Children's Day on June 1st. I believe that with the first edition we are laying the foundation for a long-term tradition in our city. This is part of the policy of the Municipality of Varna - educating children from an early age in a love of books, culture and spirituality. Over 3,000 children are waiting for you in the coming days in 30 schools. The initiative is part of our efforts to establish Varna as a city of knowledge, with which we are trying to build on the title "Varna - European Youth Capital", said Mayor Ivan Portnih. Thank you for hosting and for turning your words into reality, said Zarari Karabashliev. Val Stoeva presented the program and the authors participating in the literary days.
"The most important project is the construction of a new library. Our goal is not only to make it a home for books, but also a cultural center, a place for various types of events and manifestations and socialization of young people. I am glad that we are making progress in this process, we have implemented an international competition with over 400 participants. The winners of the competition - the Dutch design bureau, are finalizing the technical project. We are also actively working to secure funds for the construction of the library - the municipality will finance part of the project, we also rely on support from the government", said Mayor Ivan Portnih.
"This festival is creating another invisible library. The building itself will be meaningless if we don't have readers - building the library and building the readers. This is what the writers who came are trying to do. We are coming here for a cause, because it is important for our children to have a memory for books, to show them that reading is a value. The meaning of this festival is to start a conversation between them and us through books and what young people read," said writer Georgi Gospodinov.
