This is the first book translated from Bulgarian to ever enter the field of the most prestigious literary award. Georgi Gospodinov is the author of “Time Refuge”, published in 2020 by “Jeanette 45” publishing house, and Angela Rodel is the translator from Bulgarian to English.
Last night, in the late hours of May 23, 2023 (for us, early May 24), it became clear that this year’s winner of the award is Georgi Gospodinov.

Here is part of the jury’s statement, and you can read the full article here – here.
“Our winner, Time Shelter, is a brilliant novel, full of irony and melancholy. It is a profound work that deals with a very contemporary question: What happens to us when our memories disappear? Georgi Gospodinov manages to brilliantly deal with both individual and collective destinies, and it is this complex balance between the intimate and the universal that convinced and touched us.”
Leïla Slimani, Chair of the Jury for the 2023 Booker International Prize
Congratulations to Georgi Gospodinov and Angela Rodel, and to everyone involved in this book!
