The cause of the Bulgarian Book Association is to increase interest in reading and functional literacy among adolescents.
The 11th edition of the national campaign in support of reading, the "Book March", in 2022 will start on April 2 - International Children's Book Day, and will end on April 23, when we celebrate International Book and Copyright Day.
The initiative is part of the mission of the Bulgarian Book Association to support literacy, culture and education. The goal of the campaign is to increase interest in reading books among children and adolescents, as well as to inform society as a whole on the topic of literacy among the youngest. The digital platform of the event this year allows the inclusion of children from all over the country and abroad.
Participants in the “Book March” will again be famous Bulgarians who will meet with children in person and online to read excerpts from their favorite children’s books to them, thus motivating them to read. Politicians and journalists have been invited to this year’s edition, and those who have confirmed so far include: European Commissioner for Innovation, Research, Culture, Education and Youth Mariya Gabriel; Vice President of the Republic of Bulgaria Iliyana Yotova – patron of the event; Deputy Speaker of the National Assembly Kristian Vigenin, Deputy Prime Minister for Effective Governance Kalina Konstantinova, Minister of Culture Atanas Atanasov; Minister of Education and Science Acad. Nikolay Denkov, Deputy Mayor of Sofia Municipality Miroslav Borshosh, and others.
The official opening of the “Book March” will be on April 2 (Saturday) at 11:00 a.m. at the Children’s Center of the Sofia Library (Slaveykov Square, 4a) with the participation of the organizers and partners of the campaign. The main partner and co-organizer of the official opening of the event is the Sofia Library, which has prepared a colorful program of literary events for children.
The day to start the campaign was not chosen by chance – it is the International Children’s Book Day, which is celebrated every year throughout the world and coincides with the birthday of the Danish writer Hans Christian Andersen, who created some of the most popular fairy tales of all time. 60 years ago, UNESCO established the International Gold Medal in the name of Andersen, also called the “Little Nobel Prize”.
As part of the "Book March" campaign, a series of interesting events will be held across the country this year:
"Reading Marathon" from April 2 to 21, 2022 in libraries and community centers across the country in the form of a series of meetings, readings, premieres, dramatizations, competitions, etc., in order to re-establish libraries as a significant place for reading, communication and community meetings in person or online in a digital environment. This year, the national "Reading Marathon" will focus on April 15 and will be dedicated to Emilia Milkova - a long-time member of the Board of the Bulgarian Library and Information Association (BLIA), Chair of the BLIA (2020 - 2021) and one of the initiators of turning the initiative of the RB "Pencho Slaveykov" - Varna "Marathon of Reading People" into a national event.
The tenth edition of the National Award “Magic Pearl” is once again part of the “Book March” and gives children from 5 to 16 years old an excellent opportunity to view the nominations and choose their favorite books.
