On June 16, 2017, at the “The Art Of Love” Bakery, the “Poppies for Mary” Foundation presented the book “My Sister Maya from Heaven” with an exhibition of illustrations. We can boldly say that such an edition on the Bulgarian market can hardly be found, let alone created by native authors. The story is the work of Dr. Boyana Petkova, and the illustrations are by the artist Vessela Kucheva.
In their quest to “protect” their children from everything bad, parents often do not know how to talk about the difficult moments in life, and the loss of a child is perhaps one of the most difficult and difficult for the entire family. It is precisely into this personal human drama that the children’s book “My Sister Maya from Heaven” takes us, which speaks to both children and parents in a very beautiful and gentle way. The illustrations, in turn, complement the text and themselves provoke dialogue while you read or look at the edition.
We will present the illustrations and their author Vessela Kucheva in more detail as soon as possible, and here is what Dr. Boyana Petkova shared on the event page: “I wanted to tell you something else about the book. The printing house asked us to add additional pages at the end so that the book could be properly bound. I admit that I never opened the finalized file that Veseto sent me, I just trusted her… And yesterday I looked at the penultimate page after the table of contents – a rainbow. And I asked Veseto if he knew that babies born after a loss are called Rainbow babies in English, rainbow babies born from the meeting of the sun and the rain? No, Veseto tells me… it just came to me to draw it. So, I hope this is the beginning of a bigger conversation, because there is still a lot of work to do.”
