The first interdisciplinary scientific forum of its kind in Bulgaria, "Book and Font. Tradition and Modernity", will take place in Sofia between April 8 and 9, 2022, in the New Conference Hall of Sofia University "St. Kliment Ohridski".
The event aims to bring together specialists from the fields of humanities, graphic design, typography, publishing, history, literature and fine arts, creating a common platform for debate on topics related to contemporary books and fonts, as well as to provide a historical perspective on the development of writing, typography and book publishing.
The forum opens with an exhibition on the topic on April 7, 2022 (Hall 1C, Union of Bulgarian Artists, 1st floor, 6 Shipka Str.) from 5:30 p.m. and will continue as a two-day scientific conference. During the conference, a specialized Workshop on "OpenType Technologies in Font Design" will also take place.
The topics and issues that will be emphasized at the forum are the following:
• The origin of writing in Bulgaria;
• The construction of the handwritten Glagolitic and Cyrillic script and its functioning within the framework of medieval and Renaissance Bulgarian culture;
• The common semantic and aesthetic principles, and the systematic unity between the art of the script and the art of the book;
• The Renaissance book. Initials, signatures and illustration;
• The different aspects of the art of the book in the humanities today.
Special attention will be paid to the modern digital script and its contribution to the development of book publishing.
