The creative workshop on “Paste paper” is the final in a series of workshops dedicated to the different methods of coloring paper, organized by the Department of “Poster and Visual Communication”. This technique, seemingly not requiring any special prior technical training and not containing complex internal stages, has actually been extremely widespread since the beginning of the 17th century in the creation of any type of binding – both for covers and for some internal and additional elements. “Paste” paper is a type of surface design in which a colored, viscous medium (usually starch paste) is applied directly to the surface of a paper sheet and modified with various tools and techniques to obtain a range of patterns and effects.

This year, the event is part of the Open Days at the National Academy of Arts (November 4-7, 2025) and will be available to all those interested in the field of paper coloring.

Within three hours, students and guests will be able to get acquainted with the history and theoretical aspects of the technology, and some of them will also be able to implement their projects in the practical part of the workshop. Places for the practical part are limited to the first ten participants, and those wishing to participate must bring the following materials: paints (tempera, acrylic), wide flat brushes (as well as any other type), as well as all kinds of additional tools (combs, spatulas, sponges, etc.) if desired.

The creative workshop is led by Dr. Toma Galov, a lecturer at the National Academy of Arts in the discipline "History, Theory and Practice of Classical Bookbinding".
In addition to Sofia, at the end of November 2025 the workshop will also be held at the National Academy of Arts Branch in Burgas.
The project "Creative Workshops on Paper Coloring" is implemented within the framework of the Competition for Funding Projects for the Inherent Scientific and Artistic Activity at the National Academy of Arts for 2025.
The event is part of the OPEN DAYS AT NHA, which will take place from November 4 to 7, 2025 in all buildings and studios of the Academy in Sofia and Burgas!
