The exhibition "Notes on Bulgarian Orchids" is the result of the realization of a book: Orchids in Bulgaria. Notes and Drawings by Lyuben Domozetski. The publication presents a phototype manuscript created in the period 2022 - 2023.
This contemporary manuscript is inspired by scientific journeys and exotic expeditions that scientists in the 19th and early 20th centuries undertook to different parts of the world. Often their observations in lively and fascinating language are documented in handwritten diaries, and drawings - the work of the scientists themselves or an accompanying artist - illustrate and recreate what they saw.

Today, when there are many opportunities for documenting observations and verbalizing knowledge, the author of the manuscript turns to this archaic model to present us with an exciting and interesting “territory” – wild orchids in Bulgaria. Following current research on the topic and based on authoritative publications and a database, the art historian, artist and naturalist Lyuben Domozetski expands his interests in the field of botany, accumulating personal observations and experience in discovering and recognizing these interesting plants. Subsequently, with pencil and paints in hand, he systematizes his observations in a manuscript that presents with a brief description and drawings all wild orchid species in our country. The discoveries are not long in coming, and in addition to the published and known species in the country, the author includes several more orchids discovered for the first time in Bulgaria. It is in the “field diary” of their discoverer that they are first presented and their first public announcement is within the framework of the publication and the event organized at the National Museum of Natural History-BAS. The exhibition in the Botany Hall of the National Museum of Natural Sciences of the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences presents reproductions of pages selected by the author from this diary, and at the opening of the exhibition the phototype edition of the manuscript will be officially presented. The diary itself is also included as an object in the exhibition, and additional materials and works illustrate the author's natural research interests, which are visualized in a series of scientific illustrations.
This project is organized by the Little Bird Place Gallery in partnership with the National Museum of Natural Sciences of the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences and with the financial support of the Ministry of Culture.
Between 26.04 and 05.05.2023, scientific illustrations by Lyuben Domozetski will be displayed in a parallel exhibition at the Little Bird Place Gallery.
The book "Orchids in Bulgaria. Notes and Drawings by Lyuben Domozetski" can be purchased from the Little Bird Place Gallery, as well as in the museum shop of the National Museum of Natural Sciences of the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences.
