Yesterday (December 13, 2017) the opening of the first exhibition organized by the website "Bulgarian Illustration" took place. The exhibition, consisting of 30 works by young Bulgarian illustrators, was presented in the marble foyer of the National Palace of Culture as part of the program of the Sofia International Literary Festival in partnership with the National Book Center - NDK. The opening was also accompanied by a discussion on the topic "The Difficult Meeting with the Bulgarian Publisher", which was the last discussion for 2017, declared the Year of the Children's Book.

The discussion was attended by Milena Radeva – illustrator and administrator of the website “Bulgarian Illustration”; Mihaela Petrova – head of the National Book Center – NDK; Zornitsa Hristova from the publishing house “Tochitsa”; Manol Peykov and Hristo Gochev from the publishing house “Zhanet 45”; Alexander Krastev from the website “Az Cheta”.

The conversation mainly aimed to focus on young Bulgarian illustrators who are actively working in the field of book graphics, but for one reason or another are rarely noticed by domestic publishers. Of course, there are always exceptions to the rule, such as the publishing house “Tochitsa” and the publishing house “Zhanet 45”, which work with many and different artists. As one of the main “mistakes” of the publishers, the fact that they are rarely interested in the students graduating from the specialty “Book and Printed Graphics” at the National Academy of Arts and the annual exhibitions and defenses of graduates of the specialty was highlighted. As well as the lack of interest on the part of a number of structures that can and should provoke more such conversations and exhibitions.

The difficult meeting between illustrators and publishers is also in the lack of an art editor even in some large publishing houses, whose function, in addition to monitoring the creative process within the publishing house, is to monitor the development of artist-illustrators in general. In this regard, the younger generation actively presents itself in the online space, while publishers rely on personal connections and acquaintances, which ultimately encapsulates the diversity of artists.

Many questions were raised and touched upon in the conversation, and we hope that the topic will continue and that it will be increasingly constructive. In addition to the artists, the audience included professors from the National Academy of Arts, representatives of many publishing houses, including "Jeanette 45", "SoftPress", "Enthusiast", "Krgozor", "Zlatnoto pate", "Kolibri", etc., who showed interest not only in the discussion, but also in the names of the illustrators invited to the exhibition, as well as various media.

At the end of the conversation, Milena Radeva announced that she was working on several ideas for next year, which would again benefit both illustrators and publishers, and we will monitor the development of these ideas.
