If you never imagined that architecture could become an illustration, then this week arch. Ivan Bonev proved the opposite.
“Networks of Independent Spaces: Tokyo” is a study by architect Ivan Bonev, developed between 2017 and 2019 in the laboratory of Professor Yoshiharu Tsukamoto at the Tokyo Institute of Technology. The study was completed in the summer of 2020 together with illustrator Victoria Paeva, architect Veronika Boneva and architect Anton Kerezov.
The book Networks of Independent Spaces: Tokyo is a catalog for the exhibition of the same name from the fall of 2020, part of the 31 Days of Japanese Culture in Bulgaria, organized by the Transformers Association and the Embassy of Japan in Bulgaria.
Here is what he shared specifically for our site about his research on a site that he is developing, using isometric sketches, through which he explores how spaces are organized and used. And we are extremely grateful to him for the photos!
"In preparation for the exhibition, my sketches were copied and scaled to a larger format (50x70cm) in a team with illustrator Victoria Paeva, architect Veronika Boneva, Veronika Tabakova and Silvia Cherneva, using the so-called "public drawing" method, through which we all drew together on all the illustrations based on numerous photographs, maps and documents from the archive of my research. Thus, the drawings became a collective product that comprehensively reflects the characteristics of the spaces, as a result of a discussion between everyone." I digitized the architectural and management analysis of the places on the scanned hand illustrations.”
Truly, Ivan Bonev manages to transport us across an entire continent to reach the very different culture of Japan. Every detail in his book is precise to a painful perfection. From the cover, through the Japanese sewing of the pages, to the interior layout, the overall architecture of this publication is a structure that will provoke the interest of every fellow illustrator. Because, yes, here architecture becomes illustration.
