Two names (and a pseudonym):
Petya Evlogieva
Introduce yourself in a few words:
I am filled with gratitude that through my art I can share the pleasures of life and even more practically my profession and livelihood. This way I can develop, travel, be in the mountains and at the sea. In a few words - I am Petya, an extremely happy artist!
What did you graduate from?
I was born in Montana and graduated from the “Petar Bogdan” Secondary School of Fine Arts with a major in English, but since I was a child I attended art school with teacher Reni Petrova. Studying animation at NBU was my dream and the natural path that followed after Montana.
What is your professional experience so far?
In 2005 I started working in various animation studios, on foreign productions that managed to enter Bulgaria as work - Warner Bros' "Kleiner Dodo", first as a series and then a full-length production, remains my favorite project from this period.
Then in 2008 I was part of the "Gameloft" BG team for a year, as a 2D artist, a good experience that I needed, I would say.
Part of the "Golden Apple" team, and today Studio "Zmey" is my most special and last participation in the world of animation, because in parallel with that I was already doing tattoos in our family studio "ArtCore Tattoo".
From 2008 to today, over 17 years, I think that I mostly define myself as a tattoo artist, but illustration has forever been an inseparable part of my work.
Tell us more about your work (style, technique, interests, way of working):
My great love is probably the watercolor technique. I don't use it in its purest and most enchanting vision, as you might have noticed, but it gives me both lightness and the necessary saturation to express myself. My series for Liska, I draw with the colored pencils from the Luminance series of Karandash, because it is entirely on kraft paper and that way I can solidly achieve the gradient and density that I am looking for.
I would say that the tattoos that I do also have a pronounced style and are more reminiscent of an illustration in a traditional media than what we are used to calling tattoos.
I would say that my style is more cartoonish than illustrative, because I draw more characters, respectively placed in their environment. Regarding my way of working, I would share that they always go through at least one stable sketch, cleared in volume, and then I start to color the final one on the appropriate paper or skin.
Exhibitions/participations/performances/awards:
My first major and solo exhibition was 2020 “Petya's Five Paths”, at RIM Sofia. Where we presented my various manifestations in my art, and the name is to add a joke to my multi-layered personality.
I mainly participate in many general, group exhibitions as part of collections with more artists.
In the field of tattooing, I have awards in the Color Tattoo category, several years in a row in Bulgaria, as a participant in festivals. But even more valuable to me are those from Belgium, France, Italy.
Illustrated works:
I have a personal series written and illustrated by me with the adventures of Liska “Liska's Christmas” “The Lost Beach” “Storm, Martenitsa and a few thunderbolts” and “Knowledge and Activities”.
I have the honor of being the illustrator of “Angels for Sleeping”, “Mermaid Games”, “Don’t Get Angry, Frog” and “Welcome to First Class”, all part of the collection of our beloved publishing house Rybka.
“Zvezdalan and the Adventure with the Volcano There”, which Darina Shopova wrote and I gladly illustrated, is currently almost the only book on the market that you can buy with my illustrations from my friends at Vision Books. I said almost, only because here sits my favorite “Nobody Understands Marketing”, which Diana Stoyanova wrote for everyone who needs a self-help book on marketing and I chose to give it a look, just to be sure! While we read, we will have fun!
Who is your favorite illustrator?
Well, this is a difficult question because I like a lot, but I will share with you some of them - Scotty Young, Emily Hughes, Chris Hong, Diana Naneva (this woman is a genius) and Evgenia Voynova, they simply lead the ranking.
What is your favorite illustrated book?
“Wild” by Emily Hughes
“I Hate Fantasy” by Scotty Young
What book do you dream of illustrating?
When I was little, I really dreamed of illustrating “Thumbelina”, “Alice”, but now I think that I rather like more and more crazy things and I would like to illustrate “Grandma Sends Greetings and Apologies” by Frederik Backman. I know it is for an adult audience, but even when I was reading it I thought it would be a great pleasure for me! Why not?!
