July… it’s time for the sea, relaxation and reading on the beach, so this month we will dedicate it to covers and their creators.

What does it really mean to make covers? Tell us about your process. By making a cover I want to tell the story of the book, without, however, publishing everything. My goal is to create a visual mystery that the reader can unravel while reading the book. My work process begins with reading the book. While reading, I note moments that have impressed me – situation, descriptiveness, etc. This is followed by analysis and brainstorming ideas. When I settle on one, the practical part begins – drawing.

Is the cover an illustration? For me, it is more like a poster. Through poster illustration, you can weave different elements in a very delicate and sophisticated way, creating a visual mystery. The cover should not be just a beautiful or informative cover. It should be the visual embodiment of the content in the book.

Cover, what work do you dream of creating? I don’t have a specific title. But I would like to make a book cover by an Asian author. That would be a challenge – a higher level of simplicity with depth.

What do people most often NOT know about a book cover or the process of creating it? In my practice, people are most often surprised that I read the book to make its cover. The more common practice is to read the annotation and a few reviews, but for me this is not enough. For the cover to live and pulsate, it must feel the soul of the book.

Favorite examples that made you reach for a book because of the cover? Unfortunately, I haven’t bought them yet, but I plan to fix that soon: Haruki Murakami editions from Vintage Publishing.
