Albena Limoni
Date and place of birth: I was born on November 1, 1992 in Sofia.
Education: I graduated from the Art High School in Sofia, and then the Academy, where I was part of the "Book and Printed Graphics" studio.
Professional experience: It so happened that I am not actively involved in books and illustration. I worked for a while with the "Embrace Me" studio, where we drew together with wonderful children. After that, I continued working on packaging design, which I still do today. Lately, I have been focusing more and more on illustration, books and typography.
Exhibitions and awards: I have participated in exhibitions, I have also won awards. For now, I am waiting for something very large-scale to happen that I can reflect on. The rest are pleasant events.
Illustrated works: I illustrated the book "Where the Dog Goes" by Stanislav Tsonev, SONM Publishing House (2013); I recently made the cover of "The Snake and the Rainbow" by Wade Davis, EROVE Publishing House, and with them and Kostadin Kokalanov we are currently working on a very interesting book with illustrations, which we hope will appear in mid-December; I made a small zine called "Night Swimming"; I have separate publications here and there, but I want to be able to show new work in a full-length book very soon.
Favorite illustrator: Of the Bulgarian illustrators who are known to the public, I really like Lyuba Haleva, Kapka Kaneva, Yana Levieva, Tonya Goranova... I am also a fan of Boris Pramatarov's work, although for me they are separate from the illustration - somehow independent and self-sufficient. There are others that I really like. I was also impressed by the exhibition I visited with a retrospective of Yasen Gyuzelev's work some time ago. So much thought and effort put into it. I would say the latter for each of the aforementioned authors. And of the foreign authors – a lot. I will mention two of them in the following lines.
Favorite illustrated book? I was very inspired when I looked at the illustrations by Klaus Ensikat in the book "The Black Arrow" for the first, second and sixty-eighth time. They are simply impressive – such knowledge of the culture, everyday life and the era of that time. He drew countless weapons and armor, all kinds of details, which he inscribed with an appropriate handwritten inscription, and in the meantime he also interwoven some jokes. Another impressive book for me is "At night/'s Nachts" by the great illustrator Wolf Erlbruch. The very interesting walk of a boy with his father at night, when unlike the plot, we read a completely different story in the text that accompanies the illustrations. There are others, I thought of those immediately.
What book do you dream of illustrating? Why: I would illustrate any book that I can't imagine at the moment. I prefer the surprise attack to choosing.
