What should the illustration in children's books be? Should it be a visualisation of the content of a fairy tale or a textbook, or a provocation? Can a child perceive a more abstract drawing or should it be concrete? Is it important that the drawing is "beautiful" in a pictorial sense or can it be "uglier" from the point of view of Renaissance painting, but beautiful in a contemporary sense? Should children be educated in contemporary art from this age? Can patriotic portraits of our and foreign historical figures, kings and patriarchs, instill "patriotic" feelings in children or rather boredom?
These are some of the questions that we want to discuss within the framework of Lyuben Zidarov's exhibition for the new edition of the "Zahariy Stoyanov" publishing house - "Nikolay Raynov Fairy Tales" - a luxurious two-volume, bibliophile edition of Bulgarian folk tales and fairy tales from around the world.
The exhibition is at the Art Alley Gallery at 51A Gladstone Street in Sofia, the date is October 31, and the discussion begins at 4 p.m. The following have so far confirmed their participation: art critic Philip Zidarov; artists Tonya Goranova, Kiril Zlatkov, Sotir Gelev, Penko Gelev, Mila Yaneva – Tabakova, Yasen Gyuzelev; authors Yulia Spiridonova – Yulka, Viktor Samuilov, Zornitsa Hristova. We very much hope that the doyen Lyuben Zidarov will also be able to attend. Anyone who has a connection to this problem related to our children can attend and take part in the discussion, which is organized by the website “vpreki.com” under the “Reflections” project of the “Culture” Program of the “Culture” Directorate of the Sofia Municipality in partnership with the Art Alley Gallery.
