Drawing Words brings together some of the most exciting children’s book illustrations from the UK in recent years.
Created with the support of the British Council and presented in Bulgaria in partnership with the British Embassy, the exhibition presents ten illustrators with a bright and distinctive style that contains a contemporary charge and shows the power that has turned illustration into a mass, influential art form.
The rich history of children’s book illustrations in the UK is well known from world-famous titles such as “Peter Rabbit”, “Paddington Bear” and “Winnie the Pooh”. The Drawing Words exhibition offers a look ahead to the future with contemporary illustrations from established British artists, as well as those who are just starting their creative journey.
The exhibition program also includes children’s workshops, through which the youngest artists will have the opportunity to experience and learn about this art form up close.
The exhibition is curated by Lauren Child, a multi-award winning artist and writer, Children’s Laureate 2017-2019, a title awarded in the UK every two years for an outstanding contribution to children’s literature.
“The ten illustrators whose work we are showing in the exhibition are all talented artists with beautiful drawings and paintings. More importantly, however, their works are intensely personal, they are a part of their creators.” Lauren Child, Exhibition Curator
The exhibition was created by the creative team at Etcetera Studio and graphic design at Regular Practice, and features:
Jill Calder, Robert the First of Scotland (Birlinn) Laura Carlin, In a World of Her Own (Phaidon) Rebecca Cobb, Aunt Amelia (Macmillan Children’s Books) William Grill, The Wolves of Currumbo (Flying Eye Books) Emily Hughes, Untamed (Flying Eye Books) Yasmin Ismail, Go to Bed, Fred!
