The fourth national exhibition of Bulgarian comics is dedicated to historical comics. In the exhibition, they are divided into three groups according to the period of creation: from the 1930s to 1944, from 1945 to 1990 and from 1990 to the present day.
The exhibition includes works by more than 100 authors.
“In 1940, in issue 22 of the newspaper “Chuden Svyat” the following announcement was published: “In the next issue of “Chuden Svyat” the most beautiful poem by the great Bulgarian writer Petko R. Slaveykov begins to be illustrated – “The Source of the White-legged Lady!” The artist’s name is Pena Geneva! So the first printed Bulgarian historical comic was drawn by a woman!”
– writes Petar Stanimirov, secretary of the “Comics” section at the Union of Bulgarian Artists, organizer of the exhibition, in the exhibition catalogue.
"In addition to the stories in pictures on purely historical themes, we also added westerns, as well as some fantasy stories, the action of which takes place in a certain era, based on the understanding that in order to create a historical comic, it is necessary to conduct preliminary research into the time in which the action takes place, in order to recreate it convincingly and faithfully, while also bringing additional knowledge to the reader. Some comics drawn in a comic style also meet these criteria, and they are also included in the exhibition. We believe that such an approach to choosing comics is the right path to presenting the inexhaustible diversity that the ninth art offers its fans," in the words of Alexander Vachkov.
