Yesterday, in the Sofia Hall of the Sofia Library, the exhibition "Forgotten Paintings from Unforgettable Books" was presented, featuring drawings and engravings by Rumen Skorchev and Petar Chuhovski based on works by world-famous authors. The exhibited works are donations to the library and are being presented to the public for the first time. The exhibition was opened by Hristo Kardzhilov and the director Yulia Tsinzova.

“Rumen Skorchev and Petar Chuhovski are artists from another generation that few remember. Artists who pioneered the first graphic experiments in illustration and thus enriched Bulgarian visual culture to such a high degree that for many years afterwards their successes were talked about. But still, that time was quite distant from today and many things were forgotten,” commented the writer and artist Hristo Kardzhilov.
It is precisely public oblivion that provoked the title of the exhibition “Forgotten Paintings from Unforgettable Books”. The rich collection of the Sofia Library presents for the second time this year the work of the artist Rumen Skorchev, who personally donated some of his works in 2008. Visitors to the exhibition can also see the realized books, which can be borrowed by library readers.
“Illustration has always been a part of the book since the manuscripts, but recently, unfortunately, it has left this territory because the stylization of the book no longer allows for the participation of another author who could be a co-author of the text and thus visually enrich and saturate with a visual image what the literary text itself carries.”
Ms. Tsinzova thanked the guests and expressed her joy that she sees young people in the audience who are interested in the art of Bulgarian illustrators. The current exhibition will continue its life, traveling together with the Library Bus to various schools in the capital.
The exhibition is organized by the Art Department of the Sofia City Library and will last until September 15.
