SARIEV Gallery, Plovdiv has the great pleasure of presenting a solo exhibition of the author Tekla Alexieva. The exhibition presents for the first time to the public the original drawings of the iconic book covers created by the author in the period 1979-1989 in Bulgaria.
The exhibition will feature 36 drawings by Tekla Alexieva for the covers of the series Library "Galaxy", 18 drawings from the series "Eco" and Library "Bulgaria" and other books, which represent almost all the preserved original drawings for covers from her work before 1989. Some of the presented works are in the collection of Vesselina Sarieva, and others were provided by Tekla Alexieva for the purposes of the exhibition.
The exhibition “Thekla’s Galaxies” is a gesture of the gallery owners, which, by illuminating a small part of Thekla Alexieva’s work, has the task of raising the question of the unique place of the author in art before 1989, to show the conventionality of the concept of “applied art” and the freedom of expression that it, through its underestimated role by the system, gave to the authors in the conditions of a controlled artistic environment before the fall of the Iron Curtain. Through the example of Thekla, the exhibition in particular examines the place of women authors in this established paradigm of categorization at that time. The exhibition is not only retrospective in nature, but also recalls and re-poses the themes of Thekla Alexieva’s works, which are still relevant today – questions about the utopias and dystopias of the past and the future, the materialism and consumerism of developed society, the relationship between nature – man – technology, questions about the transcendental and imagination in relation to the construct of the political and generally accepted cultural order.
And last but not least, presented in the year when the Galactica Library celebrates its 40th anniversary, the exhibition is a gesture to the thousands of fans of the Galactica Library and its creator Milan Asadurov (1949-2019).
The exhibition “Thekla’s Galaxies” at the SARIEV Gallery is also the second solo exhibition of the author Tekla Alexieva, who turns 75 on the day of the opening – November 2, 2019.
