The Society of Animalists, Florists and Scientific Illustrators – SAFSI, which was established at the beginning of the year, announced its first plein air to mark World Draw A Bird Day (DABDay). The day is celebrated worldwide on April 8. And as beautiful as the action is, there is a sad story behind it: Dory Cooper. Her uncle was wounded in World War II and while he was in the hospital in 1943, his niece went to visit him. Despite his serious condition, she asked him to draw her a bird. He drew her a robin. The little girl laughed and told her uncle that she was not good at being an artist. However, she promised him to keep the drawing. Every time she went to the hospital, the soldiers gave her drawings of birds. Three years later, Dory died in a car accident. At her funeral, the doctors, nurses and soldiers from the hospital brought her drawings. Since then, her birthday – April 8th – has been celebrated as Bird Drawing Day.
DAPHNI invites everyone in Sofia to join the artists for a science illustration in the South Park on Sunday at 10:00 am. Everyone is welcome, regardless of age or experience. No matter where you are, choose an object, draw it and share it with us or at the event – Draw a Bird with DAPHNI!
