On March 15, 2018, at 6:00 p.m., the Sofia Gallery of the Sofia Library will host the documentary exhibition "The Unknown Rayko Alexiev", dedicated to the 125th anniversary of his birth.
The citizens and guests of Sofia will be able to see drawings, cartoons and texts published in the satirical newspaper "Shturets" founded by him, and books dedicated to his life and work from the library's collection will be displayed. Of interest will be the portrait of Dimitar Peshev, painted by R. Alexiev, which was provided to us for the exhibition by his son Alex Alexiev.
Rayko Alexiev is an outstanding Bulgarian humorist, journalist, publisher, cartoonist, publicist, and feuilletonist. He is a long-time chairman of the Union of Artists' Societies in Bulgaria, and collaborates with the periodicals "Macedonia", "Baraban", "Smiah", "Lyudokos", "Bulgarian", "Maska", "Zora". In 1932 he founded the weekly newspaper "Shturets". Rayko Aleksiev was the author of the cartoons, he wrote the articles, feuilletons and humorous miniatures himself, and he himself took care of its distribution. "Shturets" was published in the artist's home until the last issue on September 8, 1944. Its circulation of 50,000 over the entire 12 years kept it in first place among the domestic printed publications.
He is the author of several collections of humorous stories and feuilletons. He participated in several art exhibitions.
His books were banned during the years of socialism. After the abolition of the communist regime in the country in 1989, Rayko Aleksiev was rehabilitated.
