Yesterday (June 9, 2017) Milena Radeva successfully defended her doctoral thesis “Artistic Illustration in Bulgaria from the 1940s to the Early 1990s. Trends and Phenomena”. The scientific jury was composed of: chair – Assoc. Prof. Dr. Boyka Donevska, scientific supervisor – Prof. Viktor Paunov, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Nezabravka Ivanova, Prof. Dr. Bisera Valeva and Prof. Dr. Elisaveta Musakova.
Milena Radeva’s topic for the first time examines the main trends and influences that distinguished the appearance of Bulgarian illustration in the period between 1944 and 1989 – defined not only as artistic phenomena, but also as a political and social environment in Bulgaria and a large part of Europe.
The specific object – artistic illustration – is only part of the wide spectrum of book illustration in its entirety. Her thesis includes: illustrations for children’s books; illustrations for children's and young adult literature; covers and illustrations for fiction; library publications and series. Due to differences in their function and artistic criteria, the following are not included: scientific illustration; scientific publications and works; encyclopedias; textbooks; periodicals – newspapers and magazines; thematic collections; cartoons; comics. The dissertation consists of 260 pages of text. It contains: introduction, five main chapters and conclusion; bibliography of 1147 sources; list of 120 authors reviewed; list of awards awarded; list of 514 illustrations; album of 82 pages; catalog with bibliographic data for the artists.
We congratulate Dr. Milena Radeva on her success and wish her much creative success in her work as an illustrator and to continue to monitor and write about the development of illustration in Bulgaria.
