The National Book Center – NDK announced the theme under which the discussions will take place in 2018. Here is what else the center announced: “In the year of the Bulgarian Presidency of the Council of the European Union, the National Book Center – NDK will pay special attention to contemporary Bulgarian literature in the context of European modernity. This is the theme under which the meetings and discussions of the NBC will be held in 2018, after the Year of the Children’s Book in 2017 was a great success and managed to focus the attention of the guild and readers on the problems of children’s book publishing, reading and writing.

The first discussion will take place on January 20 (Saturday) at 4:00 PM at the “Peroto” Literary Club and will outline the specifics of the aspects related to contemporary Bulgarian literature and its inclusion in the context of European modernity. The discussion will feature Mihaela Petrova – Head of the National Book Center; Prof. Amelia Licheva – Lecturer in “Theory of Literature” at Sofia University “St. Kliment Ohridski”; Assoc. Prof. Dr. Ani Burova – Lecturer in the Department of “Slavic Literatures” at Sofia University “St. Kliment Ohridski”; Vera Petrova – Director of the International Literature Festival. The moderator will be Alexander Krastev.

Interest in contemporary Bulgarian literature on the part of publishing houses from EU member states has been growing over the past few years. Over a period of two years, more than 20 works by contemporary Bulgarian writers have been translated. There is also great interest in publishing anthologies of contemporary Bulgarian poetry and prose. Bulgarian literature already has its place and significance on the European literary scene.

However, is there still a division between “Western European” and “Eastern European” literature? What are the similarities and differences in the searches of authors representing the so-called “large” and “small” languages in the literary European family?

These topics still excite a narrower circle of specialists. We are putting them on the agenda in the months of the European Presidency in order to publicize not only the ever-increasing interest in Europe in representatives of the literatures of “small” languages, but also to exchange experiences regarding the practices of the different Member States in promoting the different national literatures.”
