Among Tokyo’s rails, highways, bridges and skyscrapers are sheltered spaces that house the daily activities of local residents. The book “Networks of Independent Spaces: Tokyo” tells the story of shared urban spaces for fishing, farming, camping, cooking, children’s play, clubs and neighborhood communities in the world’s largest metropolis. It describes a little-known image of Tokyo, presenting the architecture, use, behavior and management of single examples and networks of independent spaces.
The idea of independence or de-institutionalization of shared activities and common spaces was developed by philosophers and intellectuals such as Ivan Ilyich, Henri Lefebvre and Elinor Ostrom. Today, independent spaces in cities are a practical expression of theoretical ideas from the early twentieth century. They are both spontaneous and purposefully sought. They stand out clearly in periods of crisis, when cohesive collectives engage in political, economic and social programs woven into their usual activities. Such projects include shared kitchens, libraries, agricultural gardens, alternative cinemas, experimental schools, independent cultural centers, interest clubs, workshops, community spaces, which are platforms for direct communication and sharing of knowledge and resources between people. Thus, the independence or de-institutionalization of common spaces is proving to be a sustainable model for uniting people with shared interests.
