Traditionally, at the Frankfurt Book Fair, the jury of the Astrid Lindgren Memorial Award announced the list of nominated writers, illustrators and organizations for 2018. Among the 235 candidates from 60 countries, three Bulgarian nominations were included: writers Viktor Samuilov and Yulia Spiridonova, as well as illustrator Lyuben Zidarov. The nominations from the Bulgarian side are made by the Children’s Books Foundation, which was elected as the nominating body from Bulgaria at the end of 2015.
The list was presented by the chairman of the jury, Prof. Buel Vestin, at the Children’s Book Center shortly before 6 p.m. Bulgarian time and can be found on Alma.
The nominations for the award are a gold mine for contemporary international children’s and young adult literature and are prepared thanks to the efforts of over 100 nominating organizations from around the world. At the end of 2015, the Children's Books Foundation was selected as the nominating organization from Bulgaria and implemented the first successful Bulgarian nominations for the Astrid Lindgren Memorial Award (2017) – writer Yulia Spiridonova-Yulka and artist Lyuben Zidarov.
