In 2021, the Leipziger Buchmesse stood as a symbol of cultural perseverance. After the cancellation of the 2020 edition due to the COVID-19 pandemic, organisers faced the difficult task of designing a fair that balanced public safety with the urgent need for literary exchange. The event, ultimately held from 27–30 May 2021 in a modified format, became a milestone in the gradual reopening of Germany’s cultural life.

Backed by federal cultural funding under the NEUSTART KULTUR programme, the fair emphasised responsibility, innovation and accessibility. Hygiene concepts, reduced capacities and hybrid programming shaped the structure of the event. While international participation was limited compared to pre-pandemic years, the symbolic importance of the gathering resonated strongly across the publishing industry.

A central focus was the city-wide reading festival Leipzig liest, presented under the special banner “Leipzig liest extra.” With more than 350 events across Leipzig, literature returned to public life in carefully managed formats, while digital livestreams extended the reach beyond physical attendance.

“We are sending a clear signal for culture and for personal encounter — even under challenging conditions,” the fair’s management stated in an official release. “Books create dialogue, and dialogue is essential for a democratic society. Leipzig remains a place where this dialogue can flourish.”

The presentation of the Preis der Leipziger Buchmesse once again underscored the fair’s literary authority. Despite the scaled-back environment, the award ceremony affirmed continuity and excellence in German-language fiction, non-fiction and translation.

Organisers acknowledged that 2021 was not a return to normality but rather an interim step. “This year’s edition demonstrates flexibility and solidarity within the industry,” an official spokesperson noted. “It shows that the book sector is resilient, adaptable and determined to maintain cultural visibility.”

Though visitor numbers were necessarily limited, the 2021 Leipzig Book Fair became a powerful symbol of renewal — a carefully staged cultural restart that reaffirmed Leipzig’s centuries-old identity as a city of books.
