The conceptual framework of the anniversary exhibition “25x25” is outlined by its very title – 25 photographic books mark 25 years since the establishment of the Photography major at the National Academy of Dramatic Arts and Film “Kr. Sarafov”. The exhibition is also a tribute to the memory of the founder of the major, Prof. Dr. Rumen Georgiev, without whose efforts this anniversary would not have taken place.
The creation of books has been part of the academic training in the Photography major throughout all these years, and the authors – our graduates and students in our major – in an undeniable and vivid way demonstrate the diversity of opportunities for creative expression that photography generously provides to free-spirited, talented and thinking visual artists. That is why the thematic scope, means of expression and graphic design of the books are so diverse – from photographic illustrations of literary works, through sociological studies, sociocultural studies and deeply personal confessions using the means of the photographic image to high-quality photodocumentary.
I thank the Fotofabrika team for their fruitful cooperation in the implementation of this undertaking. I also thank all 25 young colleagues for their readiness to respond to my invitation to participate in the exhibition. Some of the books arrived on foot, others flew from London, Bergen, Berlin, Skopje and Rotterdam alone or with their creators! I believe that the 25x25 photographic projects presented in the exhibition provide the audience with yet another confirmation of what Julio Cortázar wrote in the story “The Leagues of the Devil, or the Threads of the Holy Virgin” (translated by Rumen Stoyanov), that “…among the many ways to fight against nothingness, one of the best is to take photographs…”
And why not photography books?
