On October 16, the exhibition LYUBEN ZIDAROV – 10 BOOKS 3 PREMIERES will open in the Sofia Press Agency gallery and bookstore on 29 Slavyanska Street in the capital, consisting of illustrations for ten books illustrated over the past decade.
Most of them are editions of the Zahariy Stoyanov Publishing House. The three premieres are of the most recently published titles in 2018 with new illustrations and layouts:
Mark Twain, The Prince and the Pauper; P.K. Yavorov, Behind the Shadows of the Clouds (Zahariy Stoyanov Publishing House) and the Andersen fairy tales recently published in China.
In addition to the illustrations from the exhibition, all books will be presented with their editions and will be available for purchase on site at the Sofia Press bookstore. The event continues until November 2.
"This exhibition is a logical continuation of the exhibition "Treasure Island - Half a Century Later", which took place two years ago at the Sofia City Art Gallery. This time the emphasis is placed on the editions illustrated by Lyuben Zidarov, published or republished within the last decade. Implemented in its main part by the "Zahariy Stoyanov" publishing house and starting with the publication of the fourth, 5-volume version of Andersen's fairy tales, the initiative achieved the "rejuvenation" of several titles that had acquired a classic hue due to their popular illustrations, such as Treasure Island, Uncle Tov's Hut, Tom Sawyer, The Prince and the Pauper, The Tales of Nikolay Raynov, Yavorov's In the Shadows of the Clouds. Moreover, in accordance with the artist's creative approach, each subsequent edition of an illustrated book is marked by different from the previous ones in terms of format, general design and partly completely new illustrations drawn for the specific edition.
The other titles presented in the exhibition are entirely new works of illustration and book art – the bibliophile Silver by Andrew Motion, The Bee by Anatole France, the poetry of Bogdana Zidarova. And the most unusual among the “three premieres” – the incredibly high-quality, almost handwritten edition of Andersen’s fairy tales in Chinese, just printed in Beijing, by the young publishing house Ever After, which invited Lyuben Zidarov to be the illustrator of the first book in the starting series “Classic Works of World Literature for Children”.
The exhibition also has other features. One is to present a collected part of the current artistic production of an author with seemingly inexhaustible creative potential. Lyuben Zidarov is, with a high degree of probability, currently the oldest active illustrator on the planet. The second is the opportunity to look at the “second period” in the development of Masonic illustration, enriched psychologically and professionally, pictorially reduced and technologically complicated by the mixing of tempera, watercolors, and pencil, acquiring meditative values with the wisdom of the years and demonstrating the qualities of a work of painting.”
