“Like any child, I loved picture books. Even before I learned to read, I would spend hours staring at the smallest details – at ships sailing in stormy seas, at the tearful eyes of the little matchmaker, at mice in costumes and at castles with sharp towers. The illustrations told me stories, made me laugh and dream, sometimes they appeared in my dreams and scared me. I learned to read and then I saw them in a new way. They led me to adventures, and some of the characters I forever associated with the images from my children's books. Later, as a father, I rediscovered them and met the books of the next generation. The characters looked different, but the joy and delight in my daughter's eyes seemed to be the same.

Why is the illustration of a children's book so important? How does it help the text, the reading? How does the artist interpret the story and the messages in the book? These questions excites me today and that is why I gladly accepted the invitation of the Bulgarian Book Association to make an exhibition of children's illustrations by Bulgarian artists. The selection is a subjective choice and does not claim to be a ranking or to exhaust the variety of styles and directions in Bulgarian illustration for children. What attracted me to the specific illustrations, artists and books was the emotional connection of the drawings and the author's text, the complementing of the atmosphere or the creation of a completely new world. The presented illustrations are exciting, metaphorical and unusual. I believe that they reach children of different ages precisely with this most important quality of illustration – to evoke sadness or joy, to inspire and make people dream, to cultivate love and empathy.”

The exhibition includes the following illustrators: Lyuben Zidarov (“Mother's Tear”, Angel Karaliychev. “Sofia-Press”, 1975); Stoyan Anastasov ("The Learned Mice", Georgi Karaslavov.
